Comparing Consensus Mechanisms

The Bitcoin network, along with others such as Ethereum, employs a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism to secure its ledger and add new blocks. This method is notoriously inefficient, relying on numerous nodes competing to solve complex mathematical puzzles for token rewards. In contrast, EOSIO utilizes a Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) system, which assigns this responsibility to a select group of 21 nodes, known as “block producers.” These producers are compensated for their maintenance of the network and can be replaced through a democratic voting process with “standby” candidates.

EOSIO’s Efficiency and Environmental Impact

EOSIO has proven to be exceptionally fast, boasting a transaction capacity of 3,996 per second, a stark contrast to around 15 transactions per second on both Bitcoin and Ethereum. Furthermore, the DPoS system allows EOSIO to operate in a significantly more environmentally conscious manner. Research conducted by Genereos, a candidate block producer, alongside peer-reviewed studies from Digiconomist, reveals that DPoS is 66,454 times more energy-efficient than Bitcoin and 17,236 times more efficient than Ethereum.

Achieving Carbon Neutrality

Recently, efforts have intensified to further mitigate emissions from the EOS blockchain. The EOS community, led by the esteemed block producer EOS Authority, has collaborated with climate experts from ClimateCare to first assess the carbon emissions from EOS public blockchain servers and subsequently offset these emissions through initiatives focused on clean energy and safe water. As a result of this initiative, the network can now proudly claim to be the first blockchain with carbon-neutral servers.
