When I entered Decentraland, one of the first creators to catch my attention was DOCTORdripp, who greeted me warmly. His dynamic personality and strong work ethic were immediately apparent. Like many creators, he is passionate about merging his real-life interests with the opportunities presented by web3. Ultimately, it’s creators like DOCTORdripp whose enthusiasm will be remembered as pivotal in the evolution of web3.

Introducing DOCTORdripp

Hello! I’m DOCTORdripp, a skateboarder and tech enthusiast hailing from southern California. My professional life revolves around building websites and designing custom lighting for show cars. A significant aspect of my brand is rooted in my passion for creating bespoke headlights and running an online store that specializes in LED lighting kits. Additionally, I have experience in the streetwear e-commerce sector, among various other fields.

How Did You Discover the Metaverse?

I joined Decentraland in October 2021 and quickly launched the glowing Backwards Hat wearable just days later. I’ve been using Photoshop since version 5.5, which debuted in 1999, and began 3D modeling in December 2020 when I acquired my first 3D printer. The experience of expressing myself in Decentraland felt surprisingly intuitive, making “natural” the perfect descriptor for my initial engagement.

The Connection Between Real-Life Fashion and Metaverse Fashion

Absolutely! This connection is one of my favorite aspects of the Metaverse, particularly as a skateboarder with a fashion background. I’m drawn to the stylish elements that merge streetwear, skatewear, and high fashion. However, the relationship between real-world and Metaverse fashion extends beyond mere similarities. The Metaverse allows for the creation of imaginative designs that are both futuristic and fantastical, enabling fashion to evolve through the creativity of wearable designers and game developers. This could lead to completely new styles that diverge from our current real-life interpretations.

Vision for Metaverse Fashion

I believe the future of Metaverse fashion will be dictated by how society adopts blockchain technology. Currently, we enjoy the straightforwardness of basic 3D designs as NFTs, with a casual selling approach. The next logical step seems to be “phygital” designs, where RFID chips are integrated into real-world clothing items, effectively bridging the gap between high-end digital creations and physical brands. The progression beyond that will likely depend on the degree to which decentralized technologies are embraced in the fashion and retail sectors. Furthermore, the availability of affordable Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) experiences for shopping and social interaction could dramatically reshape the industry.

Understanding Utility in the NFT Space

The term “utility” has become a popular buzzword, and it encompasses various meanings. In the context of NFTs and wearable NFTs, utility refers to the benefits promised to token holders. This could involve airdropped NFTs, exclusive access to purchases, entry to private events, or even discounted prices. For musicians and digital artists, it might mean access to exclusive downloadable content. While not every wearable must offer utility, art projects lacking any form of utility may raise red flags, potentially indicating a risk of a rug pull. Conversely, projects that fail to deliver on promised utility can be just as problematic. Recently, I’ve become intrigued by Play2Earn wearables that offer perks created by game developers, especially when those benefits are already in place. If the game gains popularity, these perks often provide significant utility for maintaining value, provided the developers don’t dilute their worth with newer items.

Favorite Creators in the Metaverse

There are countless creators I admire! My collection boasts over 2,000 wearables. I want to highlight those who inspire me most and design their creations entirely in-house: Doki, Nikki Fuego, Michi Todd, Mr. W & Mr. J, Yannakis, Miguel Amargo, Meta Jewels, Roustan, Tangpoko, Arnj Joe, Digifun x Yaping Chen, and KJ Walker.

Futuristic Aesthetics in Metaverse Fashion

Coming from a traditional fashion background, I perceive Metaverse fashion as highly experimental and somewhat cyberpunk. I hadn’t watched the film Ready Player One until after my experiences in Decentraland, but upon viewing it, everything clicked into place. The film beautifully encapsulates the early stages of what we are beginning to experience. Much of the inspiration for our current aesthetic can be traced back to that film, along with other elements from futurism, early metaverse concepts, gaming, and pop culture. I eagerly anticipate innovations that have yet to be conceived.

The Challenges of Being a Digital Creator

One of the biggest hurdles I face as a digital creator is finding time to create amidst a hectic schedule and maintaining personal motivation. These two factors consistently influence my work. While market conditions, sales, and competition may fluctuate, the challenge of staying motivated and inspired by my environment remains an ongoing struggle.

Is the Metaverse Your Full-Time Pursuit?

Not at the moment, but I sense that as new opportunities emerge and I solidify my brand’s presence in the digital fashion realm, this may change. I might find myself devoting less time to building show cars.

Advice for Newcomers

For those venturing into the Metaverse for the first time, it can feel overwhelming. I remember feeling like a wallflower at parties, quietly floating in a hot tub without speaking up, and that’s completely acceptable. As you attend more events, you’ll start to recognize familiar faces and conversations will flow more easily. To kickstart your journey, look for Decentraland-related Twitter spaces to listen in and perhaps form a connection or two. For aspiring creators: focus on honing your craft rather than stressing about sales, especially during bear markets. Keep creating, learn new techniques, be active in the community, and support others. You’re still early in this journey, and genuine opportunities will arise for those who stay committed.

Why Decentraland Over Other Platforms?

I appreciate Decentraland for its open-source framework. It exemplifies decentralization by providing users with a comprehensive repository of building tools to create customized games and experiences. This accessibility makes it easy to learn and serves as an excellent starting point for anyone interested in Metaverse creation. While I may explore other platforms as they gain traction, for now, Decentraland remains my home.
