Decentraland represents an innovative virtual reality platform that operates on the Ethereum blockchain, allowing users to create, engage with, and monetize various types of content and applications. The platform’s native cryptocurrency, MANA, is an ERC20 token that facilitates transactions for virtual land parcels and other services within its metaverse. As a fungible token, MANA can be exchanged for other tokens on the ERC20 standard. The architecture of Decentraland includes essential layers such as consensus, land management, and real-time interactions, effectively linking smart contracts to dynamic visual and gaming experiences for its users.
A Snapshot of Decentraland’s Evolution
Founded in August 2017 by Ariel Meilich and Esteban Ordano, Decentraland quickly garnered attention by partnering with notable companies like Binance and Samsung. At its launch, virtual land parcels were priced around $20, while MANA tokens were valued at just $0.02. The game’s first map, known as Genesis City, featured 90,601 individual land parcels. During its initial coin offering (ICO) in 2017, Decentraland successfully raised $26 million. Within the Decentraland Marketplace, users can buy and sell LAND, Estates, avatar accessories, and other digital items, all supported by the Ethereum blockchain. The platform utilizes two types of tokens, LAND and MANA, enabling user interactions. Each LAND token is non-fungible and uniquely identifies a specific location on the grid, containing information about ownership and parcel specifics. To acquire LAND, users must exchange ERC20 MANA tokens, which can also be used to purchase virtual goods and services.
How Decentraland Operates
Decentraland is built upon various layered components that leverage Ethereum smart contracts. The consensus layer maintains a ledger that records ownership of land parcels, with each parcel possessing a distinct location, an owner, and a reference to a description file that outlines the parcel’s unique characteristics. The content layer dictates the functionalities of each parcel, consisting of three essential file types: Content Files for static audio and visuals, Script Files for outlining content placement and behavior, and Interaction Definitions for enabling peer-to-peer interactions like gestures, voice chat, and messaging. Additionally, the real-time layer facilitates social engagement within Decentraland, allowing users to interact through avatars and communication features. The Decentraland design application is crucial in tracking the digital real estate defined by LAND tokens, utilizing the Ethereum blockchain to verify ownership. Users can engage with the ecosystem by holding MANA tokens in an Ethereum wallet, while developers are encouraged to innovate by creating animations and interactions for their virtual properties.
Current Applications of Decentraland
At present, Decentraland primarily functions as a gaming platform. Although it has potential applications in virtual business ventures, gaming remains at the forefront. MANA is predominantly used as in-game currency, enabling players to trade goods within the game environment. Many envision a promising future for the metaverse, anticipating events like video conferences and concerts to take place within these digital realms.
